Jane Siberry, the artist’s first album, was released in 1981. It is a timeless and intimate folk-pop album on which the curious and nature-loving poet blends musical-theatre ebullience and long melodies with youthful insouciance. Some of Jane’s themes here are the enigma of love, honest reckonings with personal traits and perceived limitations, compassion around a cow’s mysterious disappearance, a dazzled and dazzling reverence for beauty. In “Above the Treeline”, Jane sings of a walk with her dog: for there stretched before us / like a ballroom glove in the moonlight lay the snowfields. The overall feeling of the album is captured musically and lyrically in the chorus for “The Blue Sky”: the sky is so blue / you can see right through / my heart is so big / I can't get through the door / that's what I'm here for.
