1983 • No Borders Here
Jane Siberry
No Borders Here, released in 1984, is Jane Siberry's second album and her breakout. It is progressive pop that uses the techniques of the genre, such as syncopation, to lightly make its points. There are surprises, including the intros and spoken words. Jane, the musical poet narrator, explores youthful life - working as a waitress, experiencing freedom in dancing class, and trying to chat with an image-conscious sales executive. (he took a course in sales / he's never been the same) There is also love: lost in "You Don't Need, elated and understanding in "I Muse Aloud", free and encouraging in "Follow Me". The curious beach observer of "Mimi on the Beach" seems to be encouraging all of us to have more of a backbone, then and now: wait for the waves to start building, for the valleys to deepen / and the mountains to increase in height / when the right times comes, Mimi / you lift yourself up and stand there, Mimi / and see as far as you can see / stand up, Mimi, stand up Mimi, stand up . The urgency of time is felt through nature in Map of the World, Part 1: the pines that line the road / sad quotations / and see-through fingers / sigh / and my steps divide the clearing in half.
